Summer palace

Today we decided to sleep in a bit. We had originally planned on going to the wall today, but decided against it since we walked 8 hours non stop yesterday, without food... apart from cookies and ice tea. Joakim of course didnt mind the cookies, or the sleep in...

Instead we spent the day at the summer palace, which is actually a huge garden with a huge lake. We went there with one of the local buses. Took about 25 minutes and cost 3 swedish kronor. Extremely cheap.

We are starting to get used to being stared at all the time. Since we are virtually the only whities on the bus we must be quite the attraction. Really, there are very little tourists here, apart from the million or so chinese tourists that is... and the groups of retired whities. The chinese groups are always wearing the same caps and vests, mostly red, with different numbers on them... hmm... we think that the number shown is some sort of emergency number to call if they get lost, but we are not sure. However, we have taken the precaution and tattooed our own mobile phone numbers in our forehead. Fancy indeed.

Tomollow (will it ever get old?) we are planning on an early trip to Simatai, a remote part of the Great Wall. We are planning on going it alone, since most trips go to Badaling which is very over commercialized and crowded, and not very original. Almost all of it has been restored. We are going it alone for another reason as well, and that is that the travel agents all offer trips to the wall, but they put so many other things in between that you sort of only get an hour on the wall. And these other activities include, shopping, getting medical advice (and of course buying the medicing to cure it), eating, and more shopping. We thought it was a rip off, but apparently the chinese want their trips to be like this. They only want to have a good time, buy cheap souveniers, eat and spend just enough time on the main sight to take a photo (where they will probably make the peace sign).

Now its time for dumplings, and whatever else we find.
